Many Japanese don’t understand the concept of going back a page.

To avoid the frustration of “losing the previous page”, sites make all links open in new tabs. Otherwise Japanese computer users get annoyed they lost the previous page.

They understand they can click on the different tab pages, but the concept of going forward and backwards is too difficult. Even if the mouse has forward and backward buttons, they don’t understand how to use them.

The most popular site in Japan is Yahoo btw. When you buy a PC in Japan, many are set up with Yahoo as the homepage, because typing in your own URL is not understood by many Japanese. They know how to click on something, but don’t understand you can type in a URL. They literally think Yahoo is the internet. They use Yahoo auctions to buy stuff, Yahoo news to read the news, have Yahoo mail, etc. Yahoo is the only site they know how to use.

They still use Fax machines and VHS tapes in Japan.
